I have been cultivating foreign crop varieties for years because they typically yield more, making them a natural choice for farmers like me. While Estonian varieties are better suited to our soils and climate, they often don't deliver top harvests.

But what if there's a way to bring value to Estonian varieties? 🤔

📍 *July 2024*: Attended METK’s field day and learned about "Perenaise", an Estonian wheat variety with excellent baking qualities. But it wasn’t until August that the idea clicked—why not grow this variety and add value by milling it? And also documenting every step on the way!

📆 *September 7, 2024*: Sowing "Perenaise"—the field's "birthday"! 🎉

This year, drought hit hard, challenging farmers across Estonia and threatening spring crops. I insured my barley and oats with EURORISK, taking inspiration from Latvia, where one-third of arable land is covered under similar insurance. My goal? Test if this could be a reliable tool for managing agricultural risks.

My total premium was 3.3% of the insured value (€1,598.62), but with PRIA’s subsidy, I paid just €479.59.

When drought impacted yields, I received €2,028 in compensation, leaving a net payout of €1,548.71—didn't make me a millionaire but who has the courage to say that he or her doesn't need that money?

This experience confirmed the value of protection. I’ll continue with EURORISK, next insuring winter crops against weather risks and preparing to safeguard summer crops in spring 2025. Risk management is now part of sustainable farming!

Since January 2024, we’ve worked on planning this event, with a focus on comparing various cover crop mixtures, seeding techniques, and timings. My role was to provide specific insights and ensure field operations stayed on track. This event provided a good look at how my preferred broadcasting system measures up against traditional methods.

Thanks to Wihuri Agri, I now have the opportunity to rent their John Deere 7R 330 demo tractor for an entire year, covering all major farm tasks. This will provide an in-depth look at the machine's performance, from tilling to spraying, and allow me to evaluate if it’s worth the investment.

🌱 Important Update: 18.10.2024, visiting some of my cover crop fields.

I spreaded them into standing crop (winter wheat and spring barley) from July 21st til 25th.

Spreading has gone well and increasing the seed rate by 15% has shown better results compared to 2023. The cost of the seed mixes ranges between €42/ha and €100/ha, depending on the components, with an average of €55/ha, which is comfortably covered by subsidy.

The main components of my mixes include crimson clover, white mustard, oilseed radish, winter vetch, phacelia, and sunflower. 🌻 Buckwheat, crimson clover, and phacelia were present in all mixes.

Overall, I’m pleased with this year’s growth, especially with winter vetch and phacelia. 🌿 The improvement is significant compared to 2023, where these crops didn’t perform well.

Oilseed radish and buckwheat did well in 2023, and the trend continues in 2024. 🌾

New crops for 2024 include white mustard, crimson clover, and sunflower. 🌼 White mustard has grown nearly 1.85m tall in some fields. I was initially unsure about sunflowers, but they’ve exceeded expectations.

Crimson clover now covers most fields like a dense carpet and has shown good resistance to trampling. Despite the challenge of growing in combine tracks, both clover and winter vetch are more tolerant to the pressure. I plan to continue cultivating these crops as long as I remain confident in my spreading approach. 🌱

Here's what I'm trialing this season and my goals for each:

Winter Rapeseed:

Aim: To finally achieve a 3-ton/ha yield with restricted nitrogen (120 kg/ha).

Testing different seed treatments and sowing densities.

Variety: “Texas” from Rapool 🌾

Hybrid Winter Wheat:

Aim: Compare new hybrid varieties against a conventional variety to see if hybrids are worth the higher price.

Trialing 5 hybrid varieties vs. KWS Ahoi 🌾

Winter Wheat “Perenaise”:

Aim: Grow and document an Estonian variety, with the goal of producing local flour.

Variety: Perenaise, an Estonian wheat 🌾
